God Hears A Woman's Cry
I enjoyed the process of getting to know the distinctive personalities of each of my three daughters, right after they were born, and I heard them cry for the first time.
I can't help but remember the birth of my second daughter. It seems like it happened yesterday.
She was born six days early and her first cry was strong and healthy. I prayed and thanked God for her and cried for joy myself, as she continued to whimper and sigh.
Over the next few days (yes, she was born back when they didn't send you home from the hospital the next day), she stayed in my room most of the time. I started to learn her unique personality as I cared and comforted her.
However, the staff did take her back to the nursery during the night hours. One morning while they were returning her back to me for feeding, I could hear and recognize my daughter's cry from all the other newborns as they wheeled her down the hall (wow, was she squalling).
They handed me my red-faced, teary-eyed, 6 lb. 2 oz. bundle and I whispered into her ear that I was with her and everything would be okay. It only took a few moments for her to relax against my chest.
In the context of this passage, Genesis 21: God heard Hagar, (a woman crying) and her cast-off son whimpering in the wilderness:
"God heard the boy's voice, and God's angel called to Hagar from heaven: 'What is the matter, Hagar? Do not fear; God has heard the boy's voice in this plight of his.' Get up, lift up the boy and hold him by the hand; for I will make of him a great nation." Genesis 21:17-18
God hears our silent sighs under the mantle of leadership or parenting. He hears our sighs of loneliness or exhaustion or grief that go unnoticed by others and he seeks to comfort us. May we be comforted to know that our Father hears our slightest sighs as loud cries.
"But in my distress, I cried out to the Lord; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from His sanctuary; my cry to Him reached His ears." Psalm 18:6
Prayer: Father, regardless of how we feel today, You are our hope. You are our refuge. Your ears are always open to us. Our ever-present help in time of trouble. Thank You that You really do "hear" our Prayers. Today...help us, Deliver us. Provide for us. Grant us Your favor. Fill us with the Power of the Holy Spirit. Give us Your wisdom. Provide the resources and strength to do All You have called us to do! And may we always reveal Your character, Your love, and Your Presence in our lives. In Jesus name. Amen.
